| Greetings to all of our partners and friends
The Lake Clifton Campus is buzzing with great accomplishments of our youth. Our youth won the basketball city championship, GO LAKERS; two youth from Heritage High School (one from the ETU after school program) had winning business plans and had lunch with rapper, entertainer, and entrepreneur Sean Combs also known as P Diddy. We also had a full delegation of youth and teachers from Doris M. Johnson to travel to Paris. Often our youth are not celebrated for their greatness but not at our campus. It is such an honor to work with principals who are really committed to education of their children. Our campus has benefited greatly by the infusion of the community school model. We all work collectively to acquire the needed services for our community and the families we serve.
Community schools are experiencing a juggling act with funding. The first round of budgeting for the City of Baltimore has a budget of 0 dollars for community schools. This is unacceptable! We must unite and let our officials know that community schools are an effective and powerful strategy for our city's youth, families and community. It certainly helps to impact the academic performance of our failing school system. There are currently 43 community schools all working to bring much needed resources into our schools for the support and betterment of our families. Please contact us to find out what you can do to help advocate for the great efforts. We must ask our politicians not to, "balance the budget on the backs of our children".

Hi-Lites from Heritage High School |
| Two Heritage High School students, Ashley Figg (an etu student) and Ashley Adams won a day trip to New York city to have lunch and present their business ideas to Hip-Hop Artist and business mogul P-Diddy. Adams and Figg won the opportunity by creating a business plan in their Career Technology class that was entered into a national competion. The winner of that competition could possibly have their product manufactured and sold by P-diddy. Figg proposed the idea of a new feminine fragrance that would be sold in high end department stores and boutiques, while Adams proposed a product line that would be sold in various chain stores at affordable prices. As wonderful as the ladies ideas were, they were only two of many other student presentations that were given.
During lunch, the entreprenerial hopefuls were further engaged by special guest recording artist Cassy and one of Mr. Diddy's staff members. Both joined Diddy in a talk with the group about what it takes to follow a dream to the point of manifestation and, the pros and cons of entrepreneurship. While in The big Apple, the group also visited Diddy's record company Bad Boy and the famed Daddy's House recording studio, which recorded artists such as the late Notorious B.I.G. and new comers Danity Kane.
I'm sure that this experience will be forever written on the hearts and minds of the participants. However, it doesn't take being PDiddy to make a difference in the lives of our young people. We need more Hip-Hop artist, entrepreneurs, every day people down for the cause of keeping the dreams of our ancestors and helping to cultivate the minds and dreams of our young people. If a man who is so busy that he has changed his name three times can do it....so can every other responsible man and woman. We all have something to give.

Hi-Lites from Doris M. Johnson

Doris M. Johnson students said good-bye to America and bonjour to Paris France for an entire week this past March. 11 students and 2 teachers enjoyed an entire week of french food and fun. The trip was coordinated by teachers Ms. Prokta and Ms. Frigge. The two educators thought it would be a great idea to emerse students in the French culture since it is the one foreign language taught at the school. Ms. Frigge said, "One of the most memorable moments was having crepes with the students across the street from the Eiffel Tower one cold day. The students couldn't stop talking about how delicious they were. I just kept saying I told you they were better than IHOP."
Prior to taking this fantastic journey abroad, the group tirelessly implemented several fund raisers to help pay for the trip. Students, faculaty and staff, The Lake Clifton Alumni Association and The ETU Community School all gave monetary donations to assist in the students fund raising efforts. With lots of hard work, team effort and determination, the goal was accomplished.
The group toured historical sites such as The Louve Museum which is famous for the glass pyramid that covers it's main entrance and is also the home of The Mona Lisa and Venus De Milo. They also toured the architecturally Gothic Notre Dame Cathedral and the famous Eiffel Tower.
In the days following their return, the students and teachers who attended the trip did a presentation for several groups of students from their school.
I am sure that the young people who went to Paris will never forget it. Hopefully, this trip encouraged them to want to explore the world and see what opportunities and great adventures it holds. Now they know that a world exists outside of Baltimore city and it's just waiting for them to arrive.

Hi-Lites from ETU
In February the ETU students celebrated Black History Month by creating Adinkra cloths to honor those ancestors they felt most impacted their lives. The Adindkra clothes were accompanied by photographs and paragraphs about the honoree. Honorees varied from close family members and friends to civil rights leaders. The Adinkra cloths will be on display until the end of April in the etu hallway. They can be viewed from 3:30 - 6:30 Monday- Thursday. Come see this beautiful tribute to our ancestors.
On March 10, 2008 ETU students Nicole Brown, Heather McGinnis, Keith Taylor and Darius Boddie made a special presentation to the Mayor and City Council in show of our appreciation for funding after school programs. Each individual spoke about what the ETU after school program means to them. Student Heather McGinnis sang the song "Listen" by Beyonce' Knowles. The song was chosen to remind those listening that our youth and young adults need and deserve to be heard. Student Nicole Brown remarked "I have alot to say about politicians and the things that they do." She went on to say "90% of it is negative. But, I am grateful that included in the 10% of positive remarks that i could make, thank you for funding our after school programs is one of them". In my opinion that says it all. Kudos to all of those who participated.
